Tattoo After Pregnancy Image

Finals week

Intro

Well, finally here may have a wider significance. Theoretically, the quarter ends, virtually ends the experience. And it is precisely when we come to the end of time available that the tendency is to realize all the things there are to be done.

Finals exams

I have three finals. The first, CSE128, is a take-home. With attached draft. The second is CSE160, the most boring class ever invented: TA poor, poor teacher, boring friends, Mom miaaaa. The third is MUS101C, of which half is already done: I just write a paper on the analysis of the first half of the Waldstein sonata of Beethoven. I am a bit 'late, but we will do that too.

And the view?

I was lucky. For various reasons: firstly, because the prof. Keith Marzullo has many contacts with the University of Bologna. Second, because I accidentally decided (Decision involuntary, what a lovely oxymoron) to follow its course. Third, because it seems I will have the opportunity to write my thesis with him. And this is the funniest part: why Keith was not entirely convinced of it, until, one day in the classroom has given us a problem, which is also the project for this class, and told us to fix it took me two weeks, it is not easy. And there is was almost disappointed when, two days later (and after having annotated for less than two hours) I brought a solution. In a subsequent email exchange I wrote:

I'm impressed with your approach. That Was the solution originally published (I Took this project from a PhD dissertation done at MIT years ago) is clever. your solution with an extra process is clever, and Explained It To Me When You Realized the That It's the first step of a protocol derivation. Remaining the actual difficulty in the derivation is what i wrote above: convincing That you can introduce yourself to P / V That critical section, on the surface, is not starvation free, But in fact in this case it is.

confess that in my approach I have not seen anything extraordinary: it seemed to me a shocking banality. No is perhaps too much, let's say I seemed simple but effective. But maybe, in my mind a bit 'naive, do not get there. The fact is that shortly after we had a meeting with his graduate student, we discuss some topics of interest to a thesis, no exhilarating and depressing to anyone.

But you like the U.S.?

not madness. There are some thing I do not like at all. For example, it is true that Americans can be awfully superficial to the point where we would say that we are kidding. But on their side is not so. A fool can not declare that until it understands that it means to be stupid, but at that point could not be true. It's the classic problem of autorefenzialità that left many stranded in mathematics, computer science, philosophy of the last century (in which I was there!).

But the nature of San Diego is fantastic. Nice run in the field of hares. And the flowers (there are many!) There flying hummingbirds. A few weeks ago there was an invasion of butterflies. And the wind that blows, do not sweat ever. And the sun, which this year has made a long desired: the beach is within walking distance, finished the tests we need a little 'relaxation!

Why do you want to stay in America? I really want to stay there: I miss my friends, pizza Saturday night, staying at the table for a long time to joke and chat, good food simple and tasty, and the controversy. But to live in Italy with a good salary must roll up their sleeves, possibly be talented and have good friendships in the U.S. approach is diametrically opposite to get a good salary you have to work even without talent, the important thing is productivity. It is a fiercely upright, and at the same time very horizontal. What can I say: I came here, I asked him to conduct the orchestra, they have done to me twice. Not that I had any "credential" and I know very well that Italy would never have happened. not less than 10 years of conservatory: the institution that we have perhaps the most backward in our country

the idea of staying, however, began when I felt very angry at the fact I could not do here the OPT without being stuck in the United States until August, for a number of quirks and stupid bureaucracy (the efficiency American falls into an abyss where the practice is of immigration) would not be able to return to Italy before getting the document to the OPT, which takes up to four months. I said, the Americans want to screw me? And I do not care of them! Instead of an OPT I get a J1 visa, I write my thesis here, and then we'll see.

Pizza Italians

Yes, the first event went: Pizza Italians with Beppe Severgnini, a journalist of the Corriere (see http://www.corriere.it/solferino/severgnini/ ) . A large group of Italians aged 20 to 70 found themselves in Coronado, an exclusive island just south of San Diego, to get to where you need to pass the beautiful Coronado Bridge. Oh God, not as `nice, you can only do in the car. But it's nice to see it from afar, and it's nice to see the city from above the bridge, it's worth it. Of our

was me, Alexia, Elena, Paul, Claudia. The Severgnini is very friendly, even with perfect strangers. Every so often came to our table, chatted amiably with us, be enchanted by Elena, his eyes and the fact that he was preparing a thesis on Prezzolini. It was left to take pictures (and I looked like a crazy Japanese, or withdrawal symptoms), protesting the fact that, after lunch, I took the cappuccino. The pizza was not much, the pens to were not very angry, but it's better this way: I do not like spicy. The tiramisu was good (but we at the Italian Culture Night we did amazing: thanks Alessia & Chris!).

A sentence that an Italian, in these parts, it almost never says is: I Apologize for Being so late. Phrase that is used, in truth, quite frequently in Italian homeland, of course, in their translation. Well, for my twenty-five readers, now down to less than five, I apologize for the delay in writing: in this week and last week there were numerous commitments.

Concerto with the Chamber Orchestra of UCSD

Of note: my concert, in which we have with the Chamber Orchestra performed the overture to Beethoven's Coriolanus (with the other manager have done Mozart and Shostakovich). It went very well, in my opinion, but I have yet to hear the record. And yes, this time there will be a video, I should get it this weekend (hopefully). Coriolanus is a strongly dramatic piece, perfectly set in Romantic music, yet unusual for Beethoven and permeated by an idealism negative that is unmatched in its symphonic music. What I found most difficult, with these young American schoolboys, and transmit the profound significance and drama that, hidden in music, has a breadth that goes beyond the simple notes marked. During the tests, sometimes I felt like I was talking and talking to himself, other times I was compelled to repeat them a ride over and over again at other times, finally I just say go ahead, because there was no time to fix. The Americans wanted to be controlled, but I was trying to seduce them: love is not an explosion, but a successful opposition at the end something is left out, something that had meaning.

satisfactions

At the same time, at the end of the concert, it was as if it were not. We had in the fund, if not simply what we had repeated many times in the weeks before? They sound good or bad, I still have my head in Beethoven. It was the following Tuesday I went to my weekly lesson Conducting, I received a satisfaction that has given me immense joy. When my teacher started talking to me about this lady who was among the violins, among small children and adults who also played in the Symphony, I focused immediately who he was. And he told me this email you have received, where this lady, talking about me and the other director, said to my professor that "while Geoff takes us to the music in his head, Luke gives us makes it inside your head." I do not remember the exact phrase: I am afraid that my memory except the concepts but not their original form. But it is as if I had received a form of beatification, because that sentence says what I always wanted to hear.

Italian Language Café

The Italians have decided to do an evening gathering in the name of the Italian people (bla bla bla), or an evening where you can eat, listen to Italian music, you're about to play ' Italy. The plan will start with three weeks in advance, and of course the first meeting we are all, in the second half, we are the third in three. I am one of those three. Invested in the first meeting, the assignment of presenting the evening. The menu was decided hastily, lasagna and pizza, stew with polenta and vegetables, tiramisu, fruit tart and crème caramel. Not bad eh? And of course there was the initial program of all, including four games, ballet initial and final two scenes, the introductory speech and the national anthem. Berlusconi was missing, I would say, and we did a portrait of today's full.

all excited at first, all committed at the end: I have do this, I have this other question, I have to study. And all ready to do nothing, but to say, "do so". And people are surprised that things are not in the beautiful country funzicano ... and what the heck! At the final night I'm there, incravattato, I present, in collaboration with the irreplaceable and Lorenzo and Frank Guido, Alessia and Tony take care of decorations. The night before we cooked up at 5 am, the day after I was a zombie.

The genius here is in early evening: screening of test pattern with the characteristic sound of waiting "followed by" National Anthem translated into Anglo-Saxon. " A delirium, which has launched the world premiere of Brothers of Italy. I put a copy in QuickTime format, for the collective, at http://www.angeltowns2.net/tuka/beginning.mov
is interactive, you have to click on it. From then on there was nothing very wonderful. To say there were no towels, there was no drinking, no one had thought everyone was too busy. No skits, as a matter of time and lack of interest, no ballet dancers and for lack of evidence, suddenly, all improvisation in English on my poor shoulders (and give thanks that I put the "s"). And I know we can not do everything myself, what the heck! (2) At the end everyone will compliment the game gestures of liked it, but participation was low, in my opinion, the coordination does not exist, all ready to get angry and no one ready to work. Poor Italy!

The semiformal semiformal

I did not want to go. It's the classic American prom. I did not want to put your foot though, as Americans, had his interest in "historic" and "cultural," we say. The fact that he was "semi" made me suspect that something was left a bit 'in half, but Vincenzo Nicola, the wise guy, quail, tells me that is the super event that no one should jump, which we have to go absolutely and blah blah blah. And then they release, these $ 22, with a heavy heart, three days before the event (the tickets, on sale for months and not yet finished, made me suspect the scam).

American to American, I also accept the idea of Maura, to go with the limousine, +14. The same afternoon, because I want to be very formal, I go to Rocco's to cut my hair (a little ironic about this, please), +18, Macy's to buy a blue tie, +22. In one day be wiped out $ 100 from my account, to the delight of her mother. And I had to resist the temptation to buy a dress shirt.

But when we go to seed this? The limousine arrives in 7 minutes, the driver is also grumpy, over 14 and we also have air conditioning that beats me on the neck. We arrive at the hotel, take more photos of a swarm of Japanese but when we climb the stairs to the room reserved for us after the classic exposure of a ID to determine whether we can or can not drink alcohol, it enters this tiny small room, with a little 'cheese and some chips on the table ... and it's all here? Yes, the food, from appetizer turns into a complete meal without adding anything. And then everyone is biting the last bit of cheese. The small room floor is as big as my room at UCSD, which is small. The terrace is lovely, God forbid, and we see a beautiful sunset from there, but certainly not all Ambaradan worth $ 22. At most $ 10, I would not even paid. God damn Vincenzo. When I see him do a head so to say, 'I'm semi-formal, which had praised me, and he apologized and said that last year had given him a full dinner, the room looked out on the beach, blah bla bla. So this year fregaturaaaaaa! But the photos are not bad, and I am rather "pulled" if you want to see go here:
