Intro
Well, finally here may have a wider significance. Theoretically, the quarter ends, virtually ends the experience. And it is precisely when we come to the end of time available that the tendency is to realize all the things there are to be done.
Finals exams
I have three finals. The first, CSE128, is a take-home. With attached draft. The second is CSE160, the most boring class ever invented: TA poor, poor teacher, boring friends, Mom miaaaa. The third is MUS101C, of which half is already done: I just write a paper on the analysis of the first half of the Waldstein sonata of Beethoven. I am a bit 'late, but we will do that too.
And the view?
I was lucky. For various reasons: firstly, because the prof. Keith Marzullo has many contacts with the University of Bologna. Second, because I accidentally decided (Decision involuntary, what a lovely oxymoron) to follow its course. Third, because it seems I will have the opportunity to write my thesis with him. And this is the funniest part: why Keith was not entirely convinced of it, until, one day in the classroom has given us a problem, which is also the project for this class, and told us to fix it took me two weeks, it is not easy. And there is was almost disappointed when, two days later (and after having annotated for less than two hours) I brought a solution. In a subsequent email exchange I wrote:
I'm impressed with your approach. That Was the solution originally published (I Took this project from a PhD dissertation done at MIT years ago) is clever. your solution with an extra process is clever, and Explained It To Me When You Realized the That It's the first step of a protocol derivation. Remaining the actual difficulty in the derivation is what i wrote above: convincing That you can introduce yourself to P / V That critical section, on the surface, is not starvation free, But in fact in this case it is.
confess that in my approach I have not seen anything extraordinary: it seemed to me a shocking banality. No is perhaps too much, let's say I seemed simple but effective. But maybe, in my mind a bit 'naive, do not get there. The fact is that shortly after we had a meeting with his graduate student, we discuss some topics of interest to a thesis, no exhilarating and depressing to anyone.
But you like the U.S.?
not madness. There are some thing I do not like at all. For example, it is true that Americans can be awfully superficial to the point where we would say that we are kidding. But on their side is not so. A fool can not declare that until it understands that it means to be stupid, but at that point could not be true. It's the classic problem of autorefenzialità that left many stranded in mathematics, computer science, philosophy of the last century (in which I was there!).
But the nature of San Diego is fantastic. Nice run in the field of hares. And the flowers (there are many!) There flying hummingbirds. A few weeks ago there was an invasion of butterflies. And the wind that blows, do not sweat ever. And the sun, which this year has made a long desired: the beach is within walking distance, finished the tests we need a little 'relaxation!
Why do you want to stay in America? I really want to stay there: I miss my friends, pizza Saturday night, staying at the table for a long time to joke and chat, good food simple and tasty, and the controversy. But to live in Italy with a good salary must roll up their sleeves, possibly be talented and have good friendships in the U.S. approach is diametrically opposite to get a good salary you have to work even without talent, the important thing is productivity. It is a fiercely upright, and at the same time very horizontal. What can I say: I came here, I asked him to conduct the orchestra, they have done to me twice. Not that I had any "credential" and I know very well that Italy would never have happened. not less than 10 years of conservatory: the institution that we have perhaps the most backward in our country
the idea of staying, however, began when I felt very angry at the fact I could not do here the OPT without being stuck in the United States until August, for a number of quirks and stupid bureaucracy (the efficiency American falls into an abyss where the practice is of immigration) would not be able to return to Italy before getting the document to the OPT, which takes up to four months. I said, the Americans want to screw me? And I do not care of them! Instead of an OPT I get a J1 visa, I write my thesis here, and then we'll see.
Pizza Italians
Yes, the first event went: Pizza Italians with Beppe Severgnini, a journalist of the Corriere (see http://www.corriere.it/solferino/severgnini/ ) . A large group of Italians aged 20 to 70 found themselves in Coronado, an exclusive island just south of San Diego, to get to where you need to pass the beautiful Coronado Bridge. Oh God, not as `nice, you can only do in the car. But it's nice to see it from afar, and it's nice to see the city from above the bridge, it's worth it. Of our
was me, Alexia, Elena, Paul, Claudia. The Severgnini is very friendly, even with perfect strangers. Every so often came to our table, chatted amiably with us, be enchanted by Elena, his eyes and the fact that he was preparing a thesis on Prezzolini. It was left to take pictures (and I looked like a crazy Japanese, or withdrawal symptoms), protesting the fact that, after lunch, I took the cappuccino. The pizza was not much, the pens to were not very angry, but it's better this way: I do not like spicy. The tiramisu was good (but we at the Italian Culture Night we did amazing: thanks Alessia & Chris!).
